10 ArticlesHaryana Deploys ‘Spandan One Tele-ECG Project’ Across Nearly 600 Government Health Facilities for Rapid Cardiac Diagnosis
- Flagship Health Initiative: The Haryana Government, in partnership with Dehradun-based health-tech startup Sunfox Technologies, launched the Spandan One Tele-ECG network on 29 May 2026 under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. By September 2026, nearly 600 government health facilities had been equipped with tele-ECG devices and training. These facilities include Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), sub-divisional hospitals and district hospitals.
- Portable Tele-ECG Technology: The initiative uses portable 12-lead ECG devices that connect with smartphones or tablets. Frontline healthcare workers can perform ECG tests at local health facilities, after which the ECG is transmitted for remote clinical review. The publicly reported system provides a clinician-reviewed result in less than three minutes.
- Rapid Cardiac Diagnosis: Spandan One is designed to improve early identification of serious cardiac conditions, including ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), in areas where access to ECG technicians and cardiologists may be limited. The reported workflow allows critical cases to be identified quickly, followed by emergency medication/stabilisation and referral to higher-level hospitals where appropriate.
- Latest Reported Performance: According to the latest publicly reported data available by 17 September 2026, the network had conducted 33,854 ECG tests, of which 9,287 were reported as abnormal, and 1,342 critical cases had been detected.
- Why It Matters: The initiative aims to shorten the time between cardiac symptoms, ECG assessment, specialist interpretation and referral, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The frequently quoted figure that India accounts for around 60% of the world's heart-disease burden originates from older estimates and should not be presented as a newly established 2026 statistic without qualification. More recent reporting cites 28.6 lakh annual deaths from heart disease in India, based on Global Burden of Disease 2021 estimates.

Palaeobotanists Discover New Species of Ancient Microscopic Fossil Fungus ‘Vizellopsidites miocenicus’ in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
- Palaeontological Discovery: Researchers Sampa Kundu and Mahasin Ali Khan of the Palaeobotany and Palynology Laboratory, Department of Botany, Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University (Purulia, West Bengal), have described a new species of ancient microscopic fossil fungus, Vizellopsidites miocenicus, preserved on a fossilised plant leaf from the Middle Siwalik sediments of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. The research paper, titled “A New Epifoliar Fossil Fungal Species, Vizellopsidites miocenicus, From India,” was published online on 18 September 2026 in the New Zealand Journal of Botany.
- Geological Age: The fossil dates back to approximately 8–12 million years ago, corresponding to the Late Miocene epoch. The epifoliar fungus was preserved on fossilised angiosperm leaf material recovered from the Middle Siwalik succession of the western Himalaya.
- Identification & Methodology: Due to the microscopic dimensions of the fungal remains, researchers utilised maceration to isolate the resistant cuticular outer layer of the fossilised leaf from surrounding sedimentary rock. Subsequent high-resolution microscopic examination revealed dark-brown multicellular fungal structures (thyriothecia).
- Distinctive Morphological Features: V. miocenicus is distinguished from the previously known fossil species Vizellopsidites siwalika by its larger cells, a more open/net-like arrangement of radiating hyphal branches, and distinctive circular reproductive structures.
- Palaeoclimatic Significance: Because living counterparts of the family Vizellaceae thrive exclusively in warm, humid tropical rainforests, this fossil provides conclusive palaeobotanical evidence that the western Himalayan foothills of Mandi supported a warm, humid tropical forest ecosystem during the Late Miocene prior to intensive tectonic uplift.

Mercedes Driver George Russell Wins the 2026 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku
- Grand Prix Triumph: British racing driver George Russell, driving for Mercedes, clinched victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 26 September 2026 at the Baku City Circuit. This marked Russell’s third Grand Prix victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
- Pole Position & Race Record: Russell claimed pole position after recording a stellar 1:42.526 lap in Q3, outqualifying Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.837 seconds. He converted pole into victory over 51 laps (306.049 km) in a total winning time of 1:38:02.143 amidst Safety Car interventions.
- Photo-Finish Battle: Russell executed a one-stop pit strategy (stopping on Lap 31 under the Safety Car) and fended off unrelenting pressure from Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, securing victory by a razor-thin margin of just 0.196 seconds.
- Podium Finishers: George Russell finished first (25 pts), Max Verstappen finished second (+0.196s, 18 pts), and rookie sensation Isack Hadjar finished third (+10.704s, 15 pts), clinching a double podium for Red Bull Racing.
- Kimi Antonelli’s Sensational Charge: Mercedes’ teenage prodigy Kimi Antonelli staged one of the standout recovery drives of the season, charging from 16th on the starting grid to finish 5th (+14.512s), ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in 6th (+22.382s).
- Crucial Exam Correction – Lando Norris & World Champion Status:
• McLaren’s Lando Norris did not finish (DNF); he retired after 35 laps and was not on the podium (third place was captured by Isack Hadjar).
• Entering the 2026 season, Lando Norris – not Max Verstappen – was the reigning Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion, having captured the 2025 World Drivers’ Championship title. - Circuit Profile: The Baku City Circuit is a 6.003-km temporary street circuit featuring 20 turns, designed by Hermann Tilke. It is renowned for its 2.2-km high-speed seafront straight along the Caspian waterfront (Baku Bulvar) and the narrow, winding castle section navigating through historic Icheri Sheher (Old City).
