Important Days // United Nations Observance

International Day of Older Persons 2026 Observed Globally on 1 October under the Theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”

International Day of Older Persons 2026 Observed Globally on 1 October under the Theme The Age of Longevity Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives
  • Global Observance & Date: The United Nations International Day of Older Persons (अंतर्राष्ट्रीय वृद्धजन दिवस) is observed every year on 1 October to recognize the contributions, rights, dignity and well-being of older persons and to highlight the opportunities and challenges associated with population ageing. The UN has observed 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons since its designation by the UN General Assembly in 1990.
  • 2026 Official Theme: The official 2026 theme is “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.” The theme highlights the need to adapt institutions, policies and systems—including healthcare, social protection, employment, housing and lifelong learning—to societies in which people are living longer.
  • Observance Date vs. UN Commemorative Event: Although the International Day itself falls on 1 October, the UN DESA Programme on Ageing's main 2026 commemorative event at UN Headquarters is scheduled for 8 October 2026. This distinction is important for exam preparation: International Day = 1 October; UN DESA 2026 commemorative event = 8 October 2026.
  • Historical Background & UN Frameworks: The United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons through Resolution 45/106 on 14 December 1990. The initiative followed the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted at the First World Assembly on Ageing in 1982. The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) was subsequently adopted at the Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002.
  • Nodal Ministry & Welfare Initiatives in India: In India, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) is the nodal Union ministry for senior-citizen welfare. The Government implements the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) as an umbrella scheme for senior citizens. Major initiatives include the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY), Elderline – National Helpline for Senior Citizens (14567), the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC) and the Seniorcare Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE).
  • Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana: The RVY provides eligible senior citizens suffering from age-related disabilities or infirmities with physical aids and assisted-living devices. Eligibility is not limited solely to BPL senior citizens; government information also specifies an income criterion of monthly income not exceeding ₹15,000, subject to the applicable scheme guidelines.
  • Elderline: Elderline 14567 is the National Helpline for Senior Citizens. It provides information, guidance, emotional support and assistance to senior citizens and is a component of AVYAY. As of September 2026, the helpline was operational in 32 States and Union Territories.
📌 Static GK & Exam Facts
Nodal Union Ministry: Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Union Minister: Dr. Virendra Kumar.
Constitutional Mandate: Article 41 of the Directive Principles of State Policy provides that the State shall, within the limits of its economic capacity and development, make effective provision for securing the right to work and education and for public assistance in cases of unemployment, old age, sickness, disablement and other cases of undeserved want.
Key Statutory Act: Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 (Act No. 56 of 2007). The Act provides for maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens and places an obligation on children or, in specified cases, relatives to maintain eligible senior citizens. Under the Act, a senior citizen means an Indian citizen aged 60 years or above.
National Helpline for Senior Citizens: Elderline – 14567, toll-free National Helpline for Senior Citizens.
UN Decade of Healthy Ageing: 2021–2030. The World Health Organization (WHO) leads implementation of the Decade in collaboration with UN agencies and other partners. The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2021–2030 the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing through Resolution 75/131.

United States Completes Military Withdrawal from Iraq and Ends Iraq-Based Operation Inherent Resolve Mission

United States Completes Military Withdrawal from Iraq and Ends Iraq-Based Operation Inherent Resolve Mission
  • Historic Military Withdrawal: The United States completed the withdrawal of its military forces from Iraq on 30 September 2026, ending the U.S.-led coalition's Iraq-based military mission against ISIS after more than a decade. The current U.S. military campaign in Iraq began with the establishment of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in 2014. The withdrawal is part of the transition agreed between Washington and Baghdad.
  • Important Base-Handover Correction: The original article incorrectly presents Ain al-Asad Airbase as one of the final installations vacated on 30 September 2026. Iraq had already taken full control of Ain al-Asad Airbase in January 2026. The final phase of the withdrawal culminated with the departure of coalition forces and equipment from Erbil Air Base in the Kurdistan Region on 30 September 2026.
  • End of Iraq-Based Operation Inherent Resolve: On 30 September 2026, the U.S.-led coalition formally concluded Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq. The U.S. military described the development as the conclusion of the Iraq-based military mission and a transition toward an Iraqi-led security effort supported by a bilateral security relationship, including targeted training and intelligence support.
  • Bilateral Security Transition: The withdrawal follows the U.S.-Iraq transition framework announced in 2024. The transition was designed to end the coalition's military mission in Iraq while developing a longer-term bilateral security relationship between Iraq and former coalition partners. The United Kingdom also confirmed the conclusion of the Global Coalition's military mission in Iraq and the beginning of a new phase of bilateral defence cooperation.
  • Regional & Geopolitical Significance: The conclusion of the Iraq-based coalition mission transfers primary responsibility for Iraq's national security to Iraqi security forces. The transition has also generated debate about Iraq's ability to counter remaining ISIS threats and manage the influence of armed groups, making the post-withdrawal security environment an important regional development. These are assessments and concerns reported by analysts and officials, rather than a settled prediction about Iraq's future security.

Union Cabinet Approves PM-DHARA Scheme with ₹1,86,405 Crore Outlay to Strengthen Renewable-Energy Transmission and Deploy 50 GWh Battery Storage

Union Cabinet Approves PM-DHARA Scheme with Rs 1,86,405 Crore Outlay for Renewable-Energy Transmission and Battery Storage
  • Cabinet Approval & Scheme Vision: On 30 September 2026, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the PM-DHARA (PM-Developing Harmonized and Accelerated Renewable-energy Access) scheme. The scheme is designed to strengthen India's Intra-State Transmission System (InSTS), facilitate renewable-energy evacuation and improve grid flexibility through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Financial Outlay & Central Financial Support: The scheme has a total project outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore, comprising ₹1,36,378 crore for development of Intra-State Transmission Systems under Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) and ₹50,000 crore for deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The scheme involves ₹54,082 crore in Central Financial Support (CFS).
  • Target Capacity & Implementation Period: PM-DHARA is intended to facilitate the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across States and Union Territories and support deployment of 50 GWh of BESS. The scheme is targeted for completion by FY 2032–33.
  • Grid Flexibility & Renewable Integration: The BESS component is intended to address renewable-energy intermittency, transmission congestion, peak-hour curtailment and electricity demand during non-solar hours. The scheme is therefore designed to improve grid integration and facilitate renewable-power evacuation within States and Union Territories.
  • Implementation Mechanism: Under the InSTS component, greenfield projects will be implemented through Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB), while brownfield upgrades and network-strengthening works will be undertaken on a Cost Plus Basis (CPB). State Transmission Utilities will act as the overall implementing agencies, while Transmission Service Providers will participate under the TBCB mechanism through the Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) model.
  • Long-Term Energy Target: The Cabinet statement says the scheme will help support India's target of achieving 900 GW of installed non-fossil capacity by 2035. This is a longer-term target associated with the scheme and should not be confused with India's earlier 500 GW non-fossil capacity target for 2030.
  • Consumer and Economic Benefits: The Central Financial Support is intended to offset part of the Intra-State transmission charges and thereby help reduce power costs. The government also expects the programme to generate direct and indirect employment in the power, manufacturing and construction sectors, including opportunities associated with BESS manufacturing, deployment, operation and grid management.

UIDAI Launches Five New Initiatives at ‘Aadhaar Samvaad 2026’ in Kolkata on the 17th Aadhaar Day

Aadhaar Samvaad 2026 in Kolkata
  • Aadhaar Samvaad 2026: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) conducted a day-long stakeholders' conference, ‘Aadhaar Samvaad’, in Kolkata, West Bengal, on 29 September 2026. The conference coincided with the 17th Aadhaar Day and brought together more than 600 stakeholders, including policymakers, industry representatives, technocrats and professionals.
  • Ministerial Presence: The event was attended by Shri Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce and Industry, who was the chief guest.
  • Five Landmark Initiatives: UIDAI unveiled five initiatives aimed at improving resident convenience, strengthening security, enabling good governance and preparing the Aadhaar ecosystem for emerging digital technologies:
    • 1. Face Authentication for ePDS: UIDAI, the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) jointly introduced a consent-based, contactless Face Authentication option for the Electronic Public Distribution System. It provides an additional authentication mode, particularly where fingerprint authentication may be difficult, and allows States and Union Territories to integrate Face Authentication into their ePDS ecosystems.
    • 2. SWIK Portal 2.0: The upgraded SWIK (Social Welfare, Innovation and Knowledge) Portal streamlines the process for seeking approval for Aadhaar authentication under the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance framework. Eligible non-government entities can submit proposals for permissible use cases through the portal to the concerned Ministry or Department.
    • 3. Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework: The new framework facilitates wider adoption of Aadhaar authentication by government and eligible non-government entities with low-volume requirements. Eligible entities can leverage the authentication infrastructure of an existing AUA/KUA without establishing their own authentication infrastructure, subject to UIDAI's security, privacy and regulatory requirements.
    • 4. Token Management System: UIDAI introduced a new Token Management System to make visits to UIDAI State and Regional Offices easier for applicable services. It should therefore be described as a resident-service/office-management initiative, not as a privacy architecture for eliminating persistent raw identifiers.
    • 5. Revamped UIDAI Website: UIDAI launched a redesigned website structured around four principal resident needs—understanding Aadhaar, accessing a service, finding a document and seeking assistance. The website includes accessibility features such as screen-reader compatibility, adjustable font sizes, improved colour contrast and keyboard navigation. It also integrates BHASHINI.
  • BHASHINI Language Support: As of the launch, the revamped UIDAI website supports 13 languages, including English and Hindi, through BHASHINI integration. UIDAI stated that it plans to expand the website to 23 languages in the near future. Therefore, the original statement that the portal was already available in 22 Scheduled Indian languages is incorrect.
  • First Aadhaar Recipient: The first Aadhaar number was issued on 29 September 2010 to Ranjna Sadashiv Sonwane, a resident of Tembhali village in Nandurbar district, Maharashtra.
📌 Static GK & Exam Facts
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI): UIDAI originated as an administrative initiative under the Planning Commission through a notification dated 28 January 2009. Uttarakhand Begins Installation of State’s First Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Early Warning System at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli

Uttarakhand's First Glacial Lake Early Warning System at Vasundhara Tal
  • State's First Real-Time GLOF Early-Warning System: Uttarakhand began installing the state's first glacial-lake early-warning system at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district in September 2026. A scientific and technical team was dispatched on 29 September 2026 to install the monitoring equipment. The installation was therefore under way as of 1 October 2026, rather than being described as a fully completed system.
  • High-Altitude Setting: Vasundhara Tal is a high-altitude glacial lake in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Government wetland documentation lists the Vasudhara Tal Complex at approximately 4,691 metres above sea level. Therefore, the original description of the lake as being at “over 4,800 metres” should be replaced with the government-documented figure of approximately 4,691 m.
  • High-Risk Glacial Lake: Vasundhara Tal is among the 13 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand identified as high-risk for GLOF-related hazards. It is safer to use this formulation than to attribute the identification specifically to NRSC unless a particular NRSC assessment is being cited.
  • Scientific and Disaster-Management Agencies: The installation campaign involves experts from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, and the CSIR-Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, under the coordination of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA). The expedition was part of the broader effort under the National GLOF Risk Mitigation Programme.
  • Monitoring Technology: The early-warning system is intended to provide real-time monitoring of conditions around the lake, including changes in water level, weather and ground movement that could indicate conditions associated with a GLOF. Current reporting supports describing the system generally in these terms. The original article's detailed list of acoustic emission detectors, solar-powered data loggers and satellite transceivers should not be presented as established facts unless the final technical specification of the deployed system is independently documented.
  • Expedition Duration: The scientific expedition dispatched for the installation was reported as a fortnight-long operation scheduled to continue until 15 October 2026.
📌 Static GK & Exam Facts
Vasundhara Tal: A high-altitude glacial lake in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Government wetland documentation places the Vasudhara Tal Complex at approximately 4,691 m above sea level and associates it with the Raikana–Dhauli Ganga drainage system. Therefore, the original statement that it simply “feeds into the Alaknanda river basin” should be avoided in this static-GK entry.
Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG): An autonomous research institute under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. It was established in June 1968 and was shifted from Delhi to Dehradun in April 1976.
CSIR-Central Building Research Institute (CSIR-CBRI): A CSIR research institute located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, established in 1947. Its research includes building science, structural engineering, disaster mitigation and related areas.
GLOF Phenomenon: A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) is a sudden release of water stored in or around a glacial lake, potentially caused by failure of a moraine or ice dam, landslides, rockfalls, avalanches, rapid water-level changes or other destabilising processes.
Uttarakhand Profile: Chief Minister: Pushkar Singh Dhami | Governor: Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) | Winter Capital: Dehradun | Summer Capital: Gairsain (Bhararisain).
