Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai Awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Non-Linear Effects and Autocatalysis

Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai Awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
  • Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 2026: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly to Henri B. Kagan of France, Professor Emeritus at the then Université Paris-Sud, and Kenso Soai of Japan, Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of Science.
  • Official Citation: The laureates were awarded the prize “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.”
  • Solving the Homochirality Puzzle: Their discoveries helped provide a chemical explanation for how homochirality can emerge. Chiral molecules can exist as two mirror-image forms called enantiomers. Life predominantly uses one form of many important molecules—for example, L-amino acids in proteins and one specific stereochemical form of sugars in nucleic acids.
  • Henri B. Kagan’s Contribution: In 1986, Kagan demonstrated that the relationship between the enantiomeric composition of a chiral catalyst and the composition of the resulting product could be non-linear. His work showed that mixtures of different catalyst enantiomers could behave differently, enabling amplification of an initial asymmetry and helping fulfil an important condition in theoretical models of the origin of homochirality.
  • Kenso Soai’s Contribution: In 1995, Soai reported a landmark asymmetric autocatalytic reaction involving pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde and diisopropylzinc, in which the chiral reaction product could catalyse its own formation. In the experiment highlighted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, an initial 2% excess of one enantiomer was amplified to 87% excess.
  • The 2003 Breakthrough: Soai continued developing the reaction and in 2003 demonstrated a system capable of generating extremely high enantiomeric excess from an initially non-chiral combination of molecules. The resulting dominant enantiomer could reach approximately 99.99% of the product, providing a striking experimental demonstration of spontaneous symmetry breaking and asymmetric amplification.
  • Importance for Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals: The discoveries have provided important tools for controlling asymmetric synthesis, which is essential in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and other biologically active compounds. Because different enantiomers can interact differently with biological systems, producing the desired enantiomer selectively is often critically important.
  • Prize Amount: The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry carries a total prize amount of SEK 12 million, to be shared equally between Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai.
  • Award Ceremony: The Nobel Prize award ceremony in Stockholm is scheduled for 10 December 2026, when the laureates will receive their Nobel medals and diplomas.
Static GK & Exam Facts
Awarding Institution: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1739.
First Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Awarded in 1901 to Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff of the Netherlands for his work on chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions.
Scientists Who Have Won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry Twice: Frederick Sanger won in 1958 and 1980, while K. Barry Sharpless won in 2001 and 2022.
Chirality: A molecule is chiral when it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. The two mirror-image forms are called enantiomers.
